Russian Beard Tax Token Pendant in Silver and Bronze
This pendant is a replica of a 1705 Russian “Beard Token” in handcrafted sterling silver setting.
A little bit of history...
In 1705, Emperor Peter I of Russia, in an effort to modernize Russian society following European models, outlawed beards and instituted a beard tax. Those who paid the tax were required to carry a “beard token”. This was a copper or silver token with a Russian Eagle on one side and on the other, the lower part of a face with nose, mouth, whiskers, and beard. It was inscribed with two phrases: “the beard tax has been taken” and “the beard is a superfluous burden.”
This esoteric piece is made to order and features the tax token cast in brass and framed inside a sterling silver frame. The pendant can be worn on both sides. Handcrafted in oxidized sterling silver for a vintage, artisanal look. Pendant comes on an adjustable waxed cotton cord.
